| Why Choose a Professional Engineer? | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Why use a P.E. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Professional Engineers are Licensed by the State of New York to meet certain competency requirements in order to produce Design Drawings and Specifications for new construction, renovations, or extensions of residential or commercial properties, and municipal facilities. A Professional Engineer is the only State Licensed Professional allowed to deem a building structurally sound, or unsound. Starting in January of 2006, the field of Home Inspection will require licensure in New York State. The home inspection license is basically for those performing home inspections who are not engineers. There will be a minimum requirement of competency for home inspectors to meet in order to perform inspections. However, there is no State standard as to the content of the home inspection report. As a result, there exists a wide variety of reports; from the detailed and accurate, to the cursory and inaccurate. |

| Hiring a State Licensed Engineer as your Home Inspector is your best bet to insure that you receive a quality home inspection report for the following reasons: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| A State Licensed Engineer has met the State Education Department's requirements for competency in Engineering Design, so he/she understands why a structure is constructed the way it is, and can spot deficiencies in the structure that non-engineers might miss; One function of an engineer is to determine the cause of building problems and failures. Licensed Engineers are the only professionals allowed by law to deem a building sound or unsound. This aids in answering, with proper authority, the most asked question by home buyers,"Is there a problem with this house?"; A well written report authored by a competent Engineer will be infinately more valuable to a prospective buyer than a checklist report which some companies hand to the buyer at the end of the inspection. |

| Educational Background Engineers have to pass rigorous classes and exams to obtain their undergraduate engineering degrees from State accredited colleges. In order to earn a Professional Engineers License, candidates have to pass two 8-hour examinations administered by the State Education Department. The first test, the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam, is administered shortly before or after graduation. Then, after 4 years of acceptable full time engineering experience heavily weighted in design work, the candidate is allowed to sit for the P.E. Exam. |
